Seller's Introduction
Our team at duPont REGISTRY Live presents this 1970 Ferrari Dino 246 GT "L," chassis 00744, a Ferrari Classiche-certified example finished in its factory-original Blu Chiaro Metallizzato over Beige leather interior. An early L-Series car representing the closest evolution of the original 206 GT formula, chassis 00744 was delivered to its first owner in Italy back in April 1970 before spending decades in Ontario, Canada. Carrying more than 55 years of extensive documented history since new, chassis 00744 underwent a comprehensive restoration completed in 2008, earning a Ferrari Club of America Platino award at the 2008 International Meet in Toronto, followed by First in Class at the 2020 Cavallino Classic. The car is accompanied by its Ferrari Classiche Red Book documenting authenticity, along with restoration records, factory documentation, and concours awards.
Overview
The Dino occupies a unique place in Ferrari history. Named in honor of Enzo Ferrari's eldest son, Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari, it established the foundation for Ferrari's mid-engine road-car lineage, from the 308 GTB through today's V8 and V6 models. Styled by Pininfarina, whose relationship with Ferrari had defined the Italian marque's road-car designs for decades, the Dino introduced a new mid-engine layout wrapped in one of the most recognizable silhouettes of the era. Unlike later Ferrari road cars, the Dino was originally presented as its own marque, wearing Dino badges instead of the Prancing Horse.
Introduced in 1969 as the successor to the aluminum-bodied 206 GT, the Dino 246 GT retained the transverse mid-engine layout while enlarging the V6 engine from 2.0 to 2.4 liters. The earliest examples, internally designated L-Series, are among the most desirable 246 GT variants, retaining several 206-derived features including knock-off wheels, a Daytona-style steering wheel, unique interior appointments, and lightweight alloy body panels including the doors, hood, engine lid, and trunk lid. Built from chassis 00406 through 01116, approximately 358 L-Series examples were produced before the arrival of the later M- and E-Series cars.
Chassis 00744 was assembled in March 1970 and delivered new on April 27, 1970, to its first owner in Ravenna, Italy. Factory documentation records its original specification as Blu Chiaro Metallizzato (Paint Code 106-A-38) over Beige 430, along with its original chassis, engine, and gearbox information. One of the rarer factory colors offered on the Dino 246 GT, this blueish -silver metallic shade was specified on only a small number of examples worldwide, making cars retaining their original color like this one, particularly desirable. Registry sources cite about 52 examples finished in this color with only 2 of those being L-Series cars.
After spending its early years in Italy, chassis 00744 was exported to Canada in the early 1980s, where it passed through several Ontario owners and participated in Ferrari Club of America concours events during the 1990s. It earned a Gold award at the FCA Nationals at Watkins Glen in 1996 and a Silver award at the FCA's Toronto meet in 1998.
In August 2002, the car was acquired by its next owner, who commissioned a comprehensive restoration carried out between 2003 and 2008. The work included stripping the car to its bare chassis and tub, correcting and aligning the bodywork, returning the exterior to its factory-correct finish, rebuilding the engine and transaxle, refurbishing the suspension, and installing a new Beige leather interior, carpets, and dashboard.
The completed restoration received Ferrari Club of America judging's highest recognition, earning a Platino award at the 2008 International Meet Field and Driving Concours in Toronto. Since then, chassis 00744 has continued its concours success with First Place at Le Belle Macchine d'Italia at Skytop Lodge in Pennsylvania and First in Class at the prestigious 2020 Cavallino Classic.
Presented today with chrome bumpers and 14-inch Cromodora wheels secured by knock-off hubs, the car retains the distinctive appearance that defines the early Dino 246 GT. The cabin features Veglia Borletti instrumentation, a Daytona-style steering wheel, and the open-gate shifter for the five-speed manual transmission, that sends power from the 2.4-liter Tipo 135 CS V6 to the rear wheels.
Offered here with Ferrari Classiche certification, documented ownership history dating back to its original 1970 Italian delivery, a concours-recognized restoration, and the highly sought-after L-Series specification, chassis 00744 represents an opportunity to acquire a particularly well-documented example of one of Ferrari’s most important early mid-engine road cars.
Inspector Notes: This is a really special Dino, especially being an early L-Series car with the super rare Blu Chiaro Metallizzato color. 1 of only 2 L-Series in that shade. It has a great history, Ferrari Classiche certification, and a restoration that earned multiple concours awards, including Cavallino Classic. Overall, it’s a very well-documented and highly regarded example.
