Additional highlights include a numbered model car, a model of the transport truck, a GNX jacket, GNX book, car cover, owner’s manuals, the original window sticker and a clean CARFAX history.
Overview
The Buick GNX occupies a unique place in American performance-car history, emerging in 1987 as the ultimate evolution of Buick’s turbocharged Regal Grand National. Developed with American Specialty Cars (ASC) and McLaren Engines, the GNX received a series of mechanical and chassis modifications designed to elevate its performance beyond that of the already formidable Grand National. Limited to 547 examples for its final model year, the GNX became an instant modern classic, celebrated for its understated all-black appearance and formidable turbocharged power delivery. Rather than relying on a large-displacement V8, Buick pursued a different performance formula, using forced induction and carefully engineered chassis upgrades to establish the GNX as one of the era’s most distinctive American performance cars. Today, its limited production, motorsport-inspired development, and outsized reputation have secured its position among the most collectible Buicks ever produced.
To distinguish the GNX from a traditional Grand National, it underwent the following upgrades: The Garrett Turbo was upgraded with a ceramic impeller for quicker boost, and ceramic coated for improved heat dissipation. An Upgraded ECU and Intercooler were added, along with a dual exhaust. Improvements in calibration to the transmission were made, and a cooler was added. Vents were added to the fenders to add airflow through the engine bay. A GNX-embossed rear axle housing cover was added to provide additional rear axle rigidity. A Longitudinal Rear Ladder Bar was added to help plant the rear tires and apply full power to the ground during a launch. A panhard rod and track rod to keep the axle located in place when cornering was also added.
The exterior is finished in black, the signature color associated with the GNX and its Grand National heritage. Its purposeful appearance is enhanced by 16-inch black mesh wheels fitted with GNX center caps, complementing the car’s monochromatic styling. Heat-extracting fender vents distinguish the front fenders, while composite wheel arch flares give the body a more muscular stance. A three-piece rear spoiler adds a distinctive finishing detail, and GNX badging identifies this special model. The restrained color scheme and functional-looking exterior enhancements reflect the GNX’s original approach to performance, favoring a subtle, aggressive appearance over unnecessary ornamentation. With only 115 miles showing, this example presents an exceptionally low-mileage opportunity to appreciate the GNX’s distinctive styling and factory-specific details.
Inside, the cabin is still in the wrapper from the factory. It features Black and Sand Grey cloth upholstery, complemented by front bucket seats and a rear bench. The headrests are embroidered with Buick’s Turbo 6 insignia, reinforcing the model’s turbocharged identity. A GNX-specific Stewart-Warner instrument cluster provides dedicated instrumentation tailored to the car’s performance-focused character, while a numbered plaque mounted on the dashboard identifies its place within the limited production run. The cabin retains the purposeful, driver-oriented layout characteristic of the Regal platform, with the GNX-specific details providing a clear distinction from a standard Grand National. The combination of original-style cloth upholstery, specialized instrumentation, and numbered identification contributes to the car’s period-correct presentation.
Power comes from Buick’s 3.8-liter turbocharged V6, an engine that helped redefine American performance during the 1980s. Developed further for the GNX program with ASC/McLaren, the turbocharged powertrain was paired with a 200-4R four-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. A limited-slip differential helps distribute power between the rear wheels, while GNX-specific chassis modifications distinguish the car from the standard Grand National. The suspension incorporates Grand National front suspension components, upgraded rear suspension, and a longitudinal torque ladder bar designed to improve rear-axle control under acceleration. Together, these enhancements contribute to the GNX’s reputation for formidable straight-line performance and distinctive turbocharged character, demonstrating how a relatively compact V6 could deliver performance that challenged larger-displacement competitors of its era.
Showing just 116 miles, this 1987 Buick GNX, number 340 of 547 produced, represents a remarkable opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic American performance cars of the 1980s in exceptionally low-mileage condition. Its black exterior, GNX-specific bodywork, Stewart-Warner instrument cluster, numbered dashboard plaque, and ASC/McLaren-developed turbocharged powertrain distinguish it as a highly collectible example of Buick’s limited-production flagship. The clean CARFAX history further enhances its appeal. Accompanying items include a numbered model car, a model of the transport truck, a GNX jacket, a GNX book, a car cover, owner’s manuals, and the original window sticker, providing an extensive collection of period-related memorabilia and documentation to complement this special automobile.
Inspectors Notes: The term “in the wrapper” gets thrown around a lot, but THIS car is truly still in its original plastic! The GNX is a truly special and elusive piece of American automotive history. It’s reported that Buick was very particular about allowing these cars to be delivered in pre-delivery condition like this, which makes this one very special. With just 116 miles, finding another GNX preserved in this kind of condition would be an incredible challenge. For collectors, this is about as close as you can get to stepping back into 1987 and seeing one exactly as it left the dealership.
