Originally equipped with a gasoline-fed 7.4-liter V8, this truck has been extensively re-engineered and now features a 6.6-liter LBZ Duramax turbo diesel paired with an Allison 6-speed transmission, transforming it into a highly capable and purpose-built 4x4.

The 1987 model year holds particular significance within Chevrolet’s squarebody lineage, marking the final year of production for this iconic design. It also represents the transition from the long-running C/K naming convention to the R/V designation, with “V” identifying factory four-wheel-drive models like this example. As the last iteration of the squarebody era, 1987 trucks benefit from incremental refinements while retaining the durable, utilitarian character that has made these models increasingly sought after.

 

At its core is the LBZ Duramax turbo diesel V8, upgraded with industrial injectors, a timing modification, and a custom tune, delivering strong torque and improved reliability. Power is routed through an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission and a NP261XHD manual transfer case, providing durable four-wheel-drive capability. The drivetrain is supported by a Super Duty front axle and a 14-bolt rear axle, along with a lifted suspension setup featuring Fox shocks, dual steering stabilizers, and custom radius arms. Additional modifications include a modified front crossmember and a 4-inch exhaust system, contributing to both performance and durability.

The exterior has undergone a full bare-metal repaint in metallic black with red pearl accents, complemented by smoothed body moldings, a smoothed tailgate, and a de-badged finish for a clean, modernized appearance. Additional updates include new chrome and brightwork, a new front grille, and a spray-in bed liner. The truck sits on 22-inch JTX Forged Super Dually wheels, giving it a commanding stance consistent with its upgraded suspension.

Inside, the cabin has been updated with a Suburban-sourced interior, featuring gray cloth upholstery, captain’s chairs, and a rear bench seat. Modern amenities include an Alpine Bluetooth head unit, power windows, air conditioning and heat, and tinted windows, providing improved comfort and usability over the original configuration. The interior presents in clean, functional condition, consistent with the overall build.
