Seller's Introduction
Our team at duPont REGISTRY Live presents this exceptional 1993 Ferrari 512 TR Spider, a one-off coachbuilt example originally commissioned for a member of the Saudi Royal Family. Delivered new through Red Sea Motors in Jeddah, this car was transformed into an open-top configuration by renowned German coachbuilder Lorenz & Rankl, the only 512 TR they converted. Powered by a 4.9-liter flat-12 paired with a gated manual transmission, it combines Ferrari’s flagship performance with bespoke craftsmanship. Most recently, the car benefited from a comprehensive major service totaling over $34,000, an especially significant investment on a model of this caliber, ensuring it is mechanically refreshed and properly maintained. With royal provenance, documented history, singular build status, and this important recent service, this 512 TR Spider presents a rare opportunity for serious collectors to acquire an exceptionally rare open-top Ferrari.
Overview
Introduced for the 1992 model year, the Ferrari 512 TR marked a comprehensive evolution of the Testarossa platform. The Testarossa nameplate itself carries significant cultural and historical weight, spanning five distinct eras, from the original 1957 model to the 1984 version that came to define automotive excess of the decade, widely associated with Miami Vice and its unmistakable side strakes. It continued into the 1990s with the 512 TR and 512 M, and more recently re-emerged in modern form with the 849.
Across all iterations, open-top versions have remained exceptionally rare, with Pininfarina producing just a single factory Spider for Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli. Sources suggest that the total number of 512 TR Spider conversions is no more than six examples worldwide. To put that into perspective, Ferrari built over 2,250 examples of the 512 TR coupe between 1992 and 1994. Against that backdrop, this example stands apart as a singular coachbuilt interpretation of the 512 TR.
Supplied new on June 1, 1993, to a member of the Saudi Royal Family through official importer Red Sea Motors in Jeddah, the car’s story begins with significant provenance. Inspired by bespoke Ferrari projects commissioned by the Brunei Royal Family, an attempt was made to secure a factory-built Spider through Pininfarina. When that request was declined, the project was entrusted to German coachbuilder Lorenz & Rankl.

Known for their work on high-end convertible conversions, including Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz models, Lorenz & Rankl had previously converted several Testarossas. However, this would be the only 512 TR that they'd transformed into a Spider, making it a true one-of-one configuration. The coachbuilt modifications by Lorenz & Rankl extend well beyond the removal of the hardtop. To support the open-top configuration, the conversion included both cowl and chassis reinforcements, preserving Maranello-level build quality while maintaining the handling and performance standards of the 512 TR.
As previously mentioned, the 512 TR was a replacement for the 1980s Testarossa, and Ferrari re-engineered key elements of the car, including revised suspension geometry, improved gearbox operation, and a repositioned drivetrain lowered by approximately 30 mm to enhance handling. At its core is a 4.9-liter naturally aspirated flat-12 that produces 428 horsepower, paired with a 5-speed gated manual transmission sending power to the rear wheels. The open-top configuration amplifies the character of the flat-12 engine, delivering a more immersive driving experience that aligns with the car’s grand touring roots.
Following a period of storage within the Royal collection, the car was acquired by a close associate and underwent a comprehensive restoration completed in 2016, including a refinish in Rosso Corsa. It remained in Saudi Arabia until 2020, when it was exported to the United States with the Royal Family's approval. Since then, it has been fully registered, serviced, and maintained, including a major service with cambelts. Other highlights include pop-up headlights, silver five-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels, and a black Vinyl soft-top. Step on board and you're greeted with seats finished in Black Connolly leather, a metal open shift gate, and a three-spoke steering wheel that sits behind analog Veglia Borletti gauges.
In preparation for sale, Prancing Horse of Nashville just completed a comprehensive major engine-out service including timing belt and tensioner replacement, water pump reseal, cooling system flush, ignition components, engine and gearbox oil services, fluid flushes, new filters and drive belts, brake hose replacement, front suspension refresh, battery replacement, HVAC repairs, and power mirror service—leaving the vehicle comprehensively maintained and mechanically up to date. Receipts are available above for the full extent of services performed, totaling over $34,000.
