Seller's Introduction
Our team presents an E36 1995 BMW M3 Lightweight, a documented pre-production prototype and one of only ten examples built ahead of the main LTW production run. Showing 26,916 miles and retaining its authentic competition character, this chassis carries verified rarity and direct links to BMW M’s touring car development program, now being made available for sale through the duPont Registry Exchange inventory.
Overview
The 1995 BMW M3 Lightweight represents the most focused and competition-oriented interpretation of the E36 generation. Built as a homologation model to qualify the chassis for IMSA, SCCA, and other sanctioned racing classes, the second-generation M3 was conceived to take on rivals like the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5 16. Powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 240 horsepower and paired to a 5-speed manual transmission, the M3 Lightweight featured extensive factory engineering changes intended to reduce mass and sharpen response. Weight savings of approximately 280 pounds over the standard E36 M3’s 3,175 pounds were achieved through the deletion of the radio and air conditioning, reduced insulation, removal of the sunroof panel, forged alloy wheels, and a simplified cabin with carbon fiber trim and manual-powered cloth seats. All examples were finished in Alpine White and distinguished visually by the distinctive tri-color Motorsport checkered flag graphics and a tall rear spoiler. This particular example with 26,916 miles on the odometer, is one of just 10 documented pre-production Lightweight (LTW) cars built before the main production run, making it significantly rarer than the roughly 125 standard Lightweight models produced. The prototype specification included GT-style chassis reinforcements, a dual oil pickup system, underbody bracing, a strut tower brace, and the Lightweight aerodynamic package. Additions of a Momo steering wheel, auxiliary gauges, and an aluminum radiator with relocated coolant reservoir support period club racing history. The car remained in track use until its sale through RM Sotheby's in 2023. Being presented today on 17-inch Style 24 wheels with 235-section Dunlop Direzza Z3 tires dated 2022, this Lightweight displays honest competition wear consistent with its purpose, including exterior rock chipping, peeling rear graphics, localized repaint evidence on the rear quarter panels, and a small interior dash crack near the driver's side A-pillar. VIN labels verify the original hood, front fenders, and trunk lid. whereas replacement Lightweight decals accompany the car. Mechanically complete and structurally original, this prototype M3 Lightweight is a rare surviving example of BMW Motorsports' most track-focused production derivatives of the E36 era and remains deeply significant to collectors and marque historians.

A letter is available above from BMW North America confirming this VIN is one of ten preproduction examples.
