Seller's Introduction

Our team presents a clean, low-mileage example of an increasingly collectible modern-classic, a 1996 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra. Showing just 24,487 miles, this fourth-gen or SN-95 Mustang Cobra retains its original character, factory performance configuration, and documented ownership history. As one of the first Mustangs to feature Ford’s 4.6-liter DOHC V8, this example represents a pivotal moment in SVT history and a compelling acquisition for enthusiasts seeking an analog, naturally-aspirated American performance muscle car from the 1990s.

Overview

A successor to the legendary Fox Body Mustang, the 1996 SN-95 Mustang SVT Cobra marked a major turning point for Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) and for the Mustang itself. It was the first Cobra to move away from the legendary pushrod 5.0-liter V8, introducing the 4.6-liter dual-overhead-cam powerplant, part of Ford's legendary “Modular” V8 platform. Making 305 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 300 pound-feet of torque, this Cobra delivered a higher-revving, more refined performance character while retaining the raw engagement that defined SVT products of the era. 60 mph comes up in ~5.5 seconds, a 1/4 mile in 14 seconds, and top speed is 150 mph. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through a T45 Borg Warner 5-speed manual transmission, reinforcing the car’s enthusiast-first focus.

Beyond the drivetrain, the 1996 Cobra received meaningful chassis and braking upgrades over the standard Mustang GT, including larger four-wheel disc brakes, performance-tuned suspension components, and unique SVT calibration. Visually, it is distinguished by subtle yet purposeful Cobra-specific styling cues, including unique wheels, badges, and interior trim, which strike a balance between understated elegance and performance intent.

This particular example is finished in the highly desirable shade of Mystic Cobra, offered for the first time in 1996, which is a limited-run shade with color-shifting paint, appearing green, purple, gold, or brown depending on how the light hits. It is believed that just under 2,000 units were finished in this unique color. Showing just 24,487 miles at the time of documentation, it has a clean title and no reported accidents or damage. Reports show multiple owners since new, with registration history in Wisconsin, Nevada, and Texas. The AutoCheck score of 72 sits above the typical range for similar vehicles, and both AutoCheck and CARFAX report no accident or damage entries.

As early SN-95 Cobras continue to be overlooked relative to later Terminator models, well-preserved and highly original examples like this tire-smoking Pony are increasingly recognized for their historical significance. The 1996 Cobra, in particular, represents the foundation of Ford’s modern SVT era, combining analog driving engagement with emerging performance technology. With low mileage, documented history, and a clean report, this Cobra represents a strong candidate for collectors seeking an authentic, unmodified example from one of the most important transitional periods in Mustang history.
