Seller's Introduction

Our team is pleased to present a beautifully restored and highly authentic off-road vehicle, a 1996 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen (Puch 230GE), that has undergone a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration by Lorinser in Waiblingen, Germany. Showing 24,560 kilometers on the odometer (~15,261 miles) at the time of documentation, this pristine example was recently imported and now carries a clean U.S. title issued in May 2025. With its timeless military-derived design, period-correct specification, and extensive cosmetic and mechanical refurbishments, this G-Wagen represents a rare opportunity to acquire a pure, pre-luxury interpretation of Mercedes-Benz’s legendary off-roader.

Overview

The W461-series G-Wagen occupies a special place in Mercedes-Benz history, representing the utilitarian roots of the Geländewagen long before it evolved into the luxury SUV icon it is today. Developed originally as a military and expedition vehicle in the 1970s in Austria, early G-Wagens like this 1996 230GE prioritized durability, mechanical simplicity, and true off-road capability over comfort or technology. This example reflects that ethos while benefiting from a high-quality restoration that elevates its presentation without diluting its original character. Certain G-Class models sold in Austria and Switzerland during the 1980s and '90s were branded as 'Puch' to further distinguish them for their extended capabilities.

Power comes from a humble 2.3-liter inline-four engine, paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission and a full 4×4 system with a dual-range transfer case and three locking differentials. While modest in output, the drivetrain is renowned for reliability and tractability, particularly in off-road environments where gearing and torque delivery matter more. This configuration remains true to the vehicle’s original mission profile and contributes to its long-term usability and serviceability.

It has undergone a full cosmetic restoration, including a complete repaint in tan and a new black cloth soft top. Exterior highlights include LED lighting, rear spare tire, heavy-duty door mirrors, tow bar, tail-gate mounted spare tire, easy fuel access, and a Jerry can that reads 'Styer-Daimler-Puch', recalling the Alpine roots and German-Austrian connection.

Inside, there's room for up to eight people with bench-style seating in the rear. The cabin features refreshed interior upholstery and new carpets. It combines tan, green, and black tones with thoughtful details such as plaid door panel inserts, suede-wrapped dash elements, and folding rear jump seats, evoking a period-correct utilitarian European aesthetic. The result is a cabin that is both purposeful and bespoke.

Mechanically, the vehicle retains its original layout and has not been modified for performance, preserving authenticity. It rides on black-painted 16-inch steel wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires, reinforcing its rugged, expedition-ready stance. AutoCheck records indicate no reported accidents, and the vehicle was titled in Georgia following importation in 2025.

As interest in the United States continues to grow around early, utilitarian G-Wagens, particularly restored soft-top examples like the one seen here, this 230GE stands out for its condition, mileage, and honest specification. It offers collectors and enthusiasts a compelling alternative to modern G-Class models, delivering classic Mercedes-Benz engineering, analog driving character, and unmistakable presence in a format that is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
