Seller's Introduction

Our team presents a well-preserved example of Porsche’s final air-cooled Targa, a 1997 Porsche 911 Targa (993). Showing 38,518 miles and finished in Black over a Gray leather interior, this car represents the last iteration of the classic 911 Targa formula before the switch to water cooling. With its distinctive power-operated glass roof, six-speed manual transmission, and documented ownership history, this example offers an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a usable, analog air-cooled Porsche with everyday drivability and long-term collectibility.

Overview

The 993-generation, i.e the fourth-gen 911 Targa, occupies a unique place in Porsche history for two reasons. While earlier Targas were defined by removable roof panels and the distinctive fixed rollover hoops, the 993 was the first to introduce a more modern interpretation of the concept, featuring a full-length, power-operated glass roof that slides beneath the rear window. This variation of the Targa, which was also seen on the subsequent water-cooled 996 and 997 generations, preserved the open-air experience while offering greater refinement, structural rigidity, and weather sealing, making it one of the most practical and livable 911 variants ever produced. While this model was the first to depart from the traditional Targa formula, the 993 was also the final air-cooled 911 to wear a Targa badge.

Power comes from the (M63/21) 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine, which delivers 282 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. A 4-speed tiptronic was available, but the car seen here features the sought-after 6-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. 60 mph takes just 5.3 seconds with a top speed rated at 171 mph. This drivetrain is known to deliver the hallmark air-cooled experience, linear throttle response, mechanical sound, and direct steering feel, characteristics that define the final era of analog 911s. The 993 platform is the most sophisticated in the air-cooled lineage as it also introduced a multi-link rear suspension, significantly improving stability and composure compared to earlier generations, especially at higher speeds.

This particular example is finished in Black (L741) over Gray leather and has 35,519 miles on the clock at the time of documentation. It is equipped with a long list of desirable factory options, including a limited-slip differential, cruise control, comfort seats, soft-look leather upholstery, metal door sill trims, and oval stainless steel exhaust tips. Ownership records indicate two owners noted by AutoCheck, with no accidents reported. Recent service in December of 2025 includes an oil change, replacement cabin air filters, and a brake fluid flush. Additionally, the Targa top was recently serviced and is fully functional. Paintwork is noted on the rear quarters and passenger door, consistent with cosmetic refinishing. A receipt is available in the documents section showing a full paint correction and ceramic coating completed in December of 2025. Sensible period-correct modifications include Bilstein PSS9 coilovers and aftermarket multi-piece wheels, while the original radio is included with the sale.

Just over 4,600 993 Targas (~560 in 1997) were built worldwide, of which around 1,000 are believed to have been imported to the United States. As the final air-cooled Targa and the last of its kind to pair classic Porsche engineering with modern usability, the 993 Targa has emerged as a quietly desirable collector car. It offers a compelling blend of rarity, everyday comfort, and mechanical purity, making it an excellent choice for enthusiasts seeking an air-cooled 911 that offers a unique take on the Porsche open-top experience.
