Seller's Introduction
We present to you, one of the most revered driver-focused Porsches of the modern era, a 2005 Porsche 911 GT3 from the final iteration of the water-cooled 996 generation. Showing just over 12,000 miles with a documented service history and clean CARFAX, this example represents a purist-spec Mezger-powered GT car produced before electronic driver aids and turbocharging reshaped the 911 GT lineage.
Overview
The 996-generation GT3 occupies a pivotal place in Porsche history. Introduced as a homologation-inspired road car derived directly from Porsche Motorsport’s racing programs, the GT3 was conceived to deliver a naturally aspirated, rear-wheel-drive, manual-only experience rooted in endurance racing technology. The 2005 model year represents the second (dot2) and final evolution of the 996 GT3, benefiting from chassis, aerodynamic, and powertrain refinements that cemented its reputation as one of the most engaging 911s ever produced.
Power comes from the legendary 3.6-liter flat-six, an engine architecture derived from Porsche’s Le Mans-winning GT1 program, which involved key figures like Nobert Singer and Hans Mezger, who is a core part of the engine’s lineage and design philosophy. Making 381 horsepower and rear wheel drive, it is paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission featuring a lightweight dual-mass flywheel and limited-slip differential. 60 mph comes up in 4.3 seconds, and top speed is 190 mph. Unlike later GT models, the 996 GT3 remains free of stability control intervention, placing full responsibility and reward in the hands of the driver.
This particular example from 2005 with 12,226 miles on the odometer remains largely original and unmodified, retaining its factory A1 Black paint across all body panels with no known body or paintwork. It also carries its factory configuration, including a fixed rear wing, more aggressive bodywork, and alloy wheels. A Fabspeed side muffler bypass exhaust has been fitted, enhancing the Mezger engine’s already iconic sound. The original side mufflers are included in the sale if the buyer prefers originality. Paint protection film has been applied to the front end, preserving the exterior condition, while an aftermarket Sony headunit brings modern convenience.
According to the CARFAX report, the car carries extensive service history recorded across its life, including recent comprehensive maintenance in 2025 covering fluids, brakes, clutch hydraulics, suspension alignment, and transmission service. Ownership history reflects careful stewardship, with low annual mileage and long-term ownership in California.
As the first GT3 offered in North America, with just over 2,300 units delivered and one of the last analog Mezger-powered 911s without electronic aids, the 996 GT3 has become increasingly recognized for its purity. Its combination of motorsport provenance, mechanical simplicity, and usable road manners continues to drive collector interest, particularly in low-mileage, well-documented examples such as this 996.2.
